How To Fix An A/C Leak

We’ve included a few ways you can begin fixing an A/C leak so you can understand your unit better and communicate the issue promptly to an HVAC technician!
No. 1: Look For Frozen Evaporator CoilsWhen you first notice a water leak coming from your A/C unit, you’ll first want to check the evaporator coil since is the most common issue systems experience. The evaporator coil looks like a coiled tube with fins. If you notice ice on this component, shut down your A/C unit immediately before further damage or a faulty system ensues. Keep in mind that you should never try to chip away the ice on your own, as this can severely damage the fins on the evaporator coil. Even if this component is not necessarily frozen, you will still want to turn off your A/C unit to avoid additional costly repairs and water damage–especially if the unit is located on the roof or in an attic or crawl space where dripping water can ruin walls and ceilings.
No. 2: Check For A Cracked Or Overflowing Drain PanIf your evaporator coil appears to be intact, you’ll want to check the drain pan next. The drain pan is located right under your unit’s evaporator coil, and its main function is to collect condensation from your indoor A/C unit. If the drain pan is cracked, rusted, or overflowing, this means water is not properly draining outside, causing a build-up and leaks. Keep in mind that you can temporarily fix an overflowing drain pan using water sealant, but it’s always recommended to call an experienced and certified HVAC technician to replace the part and look at your system thoroughly without compromising your unit.
No. 3: Clean A Clogged Condensate Drain LineOver time algae, fungi, and other debris can clog your A/C unit’s condensate drain line. For DIY A/C unit maintenance, try pouring 6 ounces of vinegar into your drain line every few months to clear out any build-up of algae, fungi, or other matter. We highly recommend calling an HVAC professional for routine maintenance of your air conditioning system every 6 month. A certified technician will be able to thoroughly clean your drain line using a wet/dry vac.
